Today we’re going to be providing a restaurant review for Nonna Osteria off of 1604 in San Antonio TX. Never been to the one downtown but I’m sure they are similar in terms of food. We heard about this place because it was new at the time and we love trying new establishments. Didn’t know they had a downtown location until beginning to write this!
First things first, we looked them up online to check out their menu, pricing and what they had to offer. What got me right away was the pizzas. I love me some good pizza, although don’t typically go out to get it cause I make some pretty damn good pizza at home. BUT I do love to support local businesses and to help out in any way that I can.
I’m not sure what style of pizza it is but if I could take a guess, I’d say Neapolitan style pizza. According to the Nonna website, they serve up northern Italian food. The only thing that made us pause was the pricing. A lot higher than most places but the pricing on the pizzas were not bad at all.
The server was very friendly and explained everything well with good suggestions. They initially brought to the table some bread that was slightly toasted. Not sure what it was but thinking focaccia, with a side of some sort of olive spread. I don’t typically eat olives, but these were definitely hitting the palate.
After a good look through the menu, we started off with some drinks. Don’t ask me the names of them cause I can’t remember! Writing this post 3 months later… sorry. Well, I know what I ordered cause it’s what I typically get, which was the old fashion. No complaints at all! Bartender knew what he was doing. The other 2 drinks we ordered were delish but won’t be able to help with the names.

After that, we decided to start off with these giant meatballs on top of tomato sauce, which the server recommended. I had no luck trying to find this on the menu, unless it was a limited time item.
Anyway, these meatballs did me justice. They were cooked perfectly and the sauce and parmesan toppings paired great! I’d probably recommend having this appetizer on the menu. The only problem I had with these, is that I wanted more!

Aside from that, I ordered the Salamino Pizza. Waiter recommended adding prosciutto and took his recommendation once again. There’s so many pizza places in town, but they don’t all do it right. Which thankfully, wasn’t the case here. Everything was on point! From the crust, to the base sauce, to the toppings and to top of it all off, cooked just right. Love when there’s a little char on it. Will definitely have to come back to Nonna Osteria and try their other pizza combinations. The prosciutto did add a nice touch of saltiness.
Other than that my wife and son shared the Bolognese. We didn’t know before coming here, that all the pastas were made in house. Which, justifies the price in my opinion. Can definitely taste the difference of homemade pasta vs store bought noodles. The Bolognese sauce was so good and everything came together nicely.

Our son loves pasta, but never know when eating out cause he is a bit of a picky eater. He absolutely loved it and wanted to save some for leftovers! Always know he likes it when he says that haha.

We did finish it off with some cold refreshing scoops of ice cream 🙂 Unfortunately, we didn’t get any pictures of that. All in all it’s definitely a place that you have to try out if you haven’t been here. If you have been to Nonna’s, it’s worth going back to try the other dishes! We’re definitely going back for more!
If you’ve been here or decide to try it out, let us know! We love hear other people’s feedback, aside from our own. Looking for more places to try out? Check out our San Antonio Foodie Spots.
